Understanding Auto Insurance Maintained by DoorDash

At DoorDash, we value the safety and security of Dashers and aim to provide third-party auto liability coverage that aligns with each state's requirements. Learn more about your state's coverage by choosing your “Dashing” state below:

Boston

DoorDash provides third-party liability insurance for Dashers involved in accidents while in the “Active Status”. Per our Independent Contractor Agreement, Dashers must also maintain primary auto insurance with minimum limits as applicable by local insurance laws. Note that a Dasher’s personal insurance policy may not provide coverage while providing delivery services.

Q: What coverage is provided?

A: Active Status using Electric Bicyles and Motorized Bicyles - Effective January 2, 2026, during “Active Status,” DoorDash provides the following coverage for Dashers involved in accidents while in “Active Status” using an electric bicycles and motorized bicycles:

  • $50,000 for bodily injury sustained by any one person in an accident

  • $100,000 for bodily injuries sustained by all persons in an accident

  • $30,000 for damage to or destruction of property in an accident

Active Status using an Automobile – During “Active Status”, DoorDash provides the following coverage for Dashers involved in accidents while in “Active Status” using an automobile:

  • $1M combined limit

All Other Periods – When a Dasher is not in “Active Status”, including periods when the Dasher is available to receive requests but not providing services and when the Dasher is not available to receive requests to provide delivery services:

  • DoorDash does not provide any liability coverage. A Dasher’s personal auto insurance is primary.

A: Active Status begins when a Dasher accepts a delivery request on the DoorDash platform until the order is marked as delivered, unassigned, or canceled.

North Dakota

DoorDash procured third-party auto liability insurance for Dashers involved in accidents while in the “Delivery Available” or “Delivery Service” Period. Per the Independent Contractor Agreement, Dashers shall also maintain primary auto insurance with minimum limits as applicable per local law.

A: The Delivery Available Period begins when a Dasher has logged on to the DoorDash App, is available to receive requests to provide delivery services from DoorDash, is operating a personal vehicle, and is not operating in the Delivery Service Period.

A: The Delivery Service Period begins when a Dasher accepts a delivery request on the DoorDash platform until the order is marked as delivered, unassigned, or canceled.

Additionally, for coverage to be considered, the below condition should also be met:

  • Dashers are considered liable for damages or injuries to another party while in the “Delivery Available” or “Delivery Service” Period.

Q: What coverage is provided?

A: Delivery Available Period - Effective August 1, 2023, during the Delivery Available Period DoorDash provides the following coverage. No coverage is provided to Dashers for incidents that occurred before August 1, 2023:

  • $50,000 for bodily injury sustained by any one person in an accident

  • $100,000 for bodily injuries sustained by all persons in an accident

  • $25,000 for damage to or destruction of property in an accident

  • $50,000 for Uninsured Motorists

  • $50,000 for Underinsured Motorists

  • Personal Injury Protection in accordance with the North Dakota Auto Accident Reparations Act

A: Delivery Service Period - During this period, DoorDash provides the following coverage:

  • $1M combined limit

Delivery Service Period - During this period, DoorDash provides the following coverage:

  • $250,000 combined limit

  • $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident for bodily injury caused by uninsured motorists

  • $25,000 per accident for uninsured motorist property damage

Delivery Service Period - During this period, DoorDash provides the following coverage:

  • $1M combined limit

  • Dashers are considered liable for damages or injuries to another party while in the “Delivery Service” Period.

DoorDash provides excess third-party auto liability insurance for Dashers involved in accidents while in the “Delivery Service” Period. Per our Independent Contractor Agreement, Dashers shall also maintain primary auto insurance with minimum limits as applicable by local insurance laws.

Additionally, for coverage to be considered, both of the below conditions must also be met:

  • Dashers are considered liable for damages or injuries to another party while in the “Delivery Service” Period.

  • A claim has been submitted to the Dasher's auto policy first, and you have received a coverage denial letter.

Note: Damages sustained to a Dasher's vehicle are their responsibility and should be addressed by their auto insurance carrier.
