How to Switch Your Order Protocol on DoorDash

6 min read

Overview

You may need to update how you receive DoorDash orders. You'll need to complete the setup based on which protocol you're switching to.

Select your desired order protocol below for step-by-step instructions.

What are my options for receiving orders on DoorDash?

There are three main ways that you can receive DoorDash orders: POS integration, tablet, or email.

Option 1: Point of Sale (POS) Integration

Mx - Portal - Settings - Integrations

With a point-of-sale (POS) integration, orders are sent directly to your POS system and can automatically print in your kitchen.

  • Recommended for most merchants

  • Works for businesses of any size with a compatible POS

  • Helps reduce manual entry and errors

Important notes

  • To receive orders through your POS, you must first request an integration from your POS provider.

  • POS setup is available through the Integrations tab in your Merchant Portal. Select the POS you would like to change to.

  • If you have a current POS integration on your store, you will need to disconnect this integration and connect the new integration.

  • If you're switching from a DoorDash tablet to POS, this may affect your tablet equipment contract. Contact DoorDash Support if you have questions about your tablet fee.

  • If you are processing a change of ownership, and you select "update order protocol" during the ownership transfer. You will need to complete the integration steps below.

Next steps

  • Log into Merchant Portal with your credentials.

  • Select Settings from the left menu

  • Navigate to the Integrations tab.

  • Find your POS provider and select Get Started

  • Log in to your POS provider's system and follow the setup steps

If you run into issues during setup or your POS isn't listed, contact DoorDash Support. If your store recently went through a change of ownership for your store, reference this to the DoorDash Support team so that we can best assist you.

Option 2: Tablet

With the tablet protocol, orders are received on a DoorDash Tablet or a personal Android tablet.

You can:

  • Accept and manage orders

  • Update item availability

  • Track Dasher status

  • Contact customers when needed

This option works well if you don't have a POS system or if your POS isn't eligible for integration. Learn more about receiving orders on your DoorDash Tablet.

  • Once you sign, your tablet will be ordered and shipped automatically — no further action needed on your end.

Option 3: Email

Receive order notifications are sent to your email

  • Requires manually receiving, confirming, and updating every order

  • Best for stores with very low monthly order volume

Important notes

  • This is the simplest protocol to update — no hardware or integration is required.

  • You'll want to make sure the email or phone number on file reflects your contact information correctly.

Next steps

  • Log in to the Merchant Portal

  • On the left menu, click Help

  • Go to For account issues Get help from your Merchant Experience Partner and press Send message.

  • Select Account Support, then below, choose Change Order Protocol

  • Confirm your contact information and your availability

  • Click Submit Form

  • POS integration: Best for higher volume and streamlined operations

  • Tablet: Flexible option without POS integration

  • Email: Only recommended for very low order volume
