Seattle Paid Sick and Safe Time

3 min read

Starting May 1, 2023, Seattle’s permanent Paid Sick and Safe Time (PSST) ordinance for app-based workers went into effect.

Under the Ordinance, eligible Dashers may use accrued PSST days when they cannot dash due to:

  • Personal illness or medical care

  • Family member illness or medical care

  • Any days that DoorDash operations are suspended or discontinued for health or safety reasons

  • Dasher’s family member’s school or place of care closes

  • To escape domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking

Notice of Rights

  • You have a right to PSST guaranteed by the terms of Seattle’s ordinance. See Seattle Notice of Rights here.

  • While you remain an active Dasher completing deliveries in the City of Seattle, you can access your PSST information through visiting the Dasher app as described in the FAQ below.

  • You will accrue 1 day of PSST for every 30 days where you perform services in the City of Seattle.

  • Any accrued PSST time is immediately available to use for any authorized purpose under the ordinance. You can only use PSST in 24-hour increments; you cannot use a portion/fraction of a day of PSST.  If you work on a day that you claimed PSST, DoorDash may withhold PSST payments for that day.

  • You may only “carry over” up to 9 days of PSST into a new calendar year.

  • You have a right to be protected from retaliation for exercising in good faith the rights protected by the ordinance, including the use of accrued PSST.

  • You have a right to file a complaint with the Office of Labor Standards or bring a civil action for violation of the requirements of the ordinance, including denial of PSST or retaliation for taking or requesting PSST or otherwise engaging in an activity protected by the City’s ordinance.

Other Important Reminders

  • If you are inactive in the City of Seattle for more than 90 days, you are not eligible to use your previously accrued PSST days.

  • If you are inactive on the DoorDash platform for more than 12 months, you will lose any previously accrued PSST days.

  • When you use a day of PSST, you will be paid based on your average daily compensation for the last 12 months.

    • Beginning January 13, 2024, tips will no longer be included in your average daily compensation rate per the Ordinance.
