Understanding Your Recipient-Created Tax Invoice (RCTI)

6 min read

If your ABN is registered for GST, you may receive a document from DoorDash called a recipient-created tax invoice, or RCTI. This article explains what it is, what the amounts on it mean, and what you need to do.

This article is general information only. It is not tax advice. For questions about your own tax situation, please speak with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) or a registered tax agent.

FAQs:

Q. What is an RCTI?

A. A recipient-created tax invoice is a type of tax invoice recognised by the ATO.

When you deliver with DoorDash, you are the supplier of delivery services and DoorDash is the recipient. DoorDash issues this document to you if the ABN associated with your Dasher account is GST registered.

Three things to know

  1. It is not a bill or invoice to pay. You do not owe DoorDash anything, and there is nothing to pay to DoorDash.

  2. Your pay has not changed. Nothing has been deducted from your pay. The RCTI is a record of payments you have already received.

  3. You only receive an RCTI if you are registered for GST. If you are not registered for GST, you will not receive an RCTI.

Q. Why am I receiving this?

A. Payments to Dashers registered for GST are treated as GST-inclusive, which means the GST is already contained within the amount you were paid, rather than added on top or taken out.

When your payout includes GST, DoorDash issues you an RCTI setting out those GST amounts for each period. You do not need to request an RCTI, and receiving an RCTI does not mean anything is wrong with your account.

Q. Is DoorDash taking GST out of my pay?

A. No. Nothing is being deducted from your pay and your earnings have not changed.

Your payments have always been treated as GST-inclusive. The RCTI simply shows how much of what you have already been paid was GST. It is a breakdown of what you have already received.

Q. Who receives an RCTI?

A. You will generally receive an RCTI if all of the following apply:

  • Your ABN is registered for GST with the Australian Business Register, and both your ABN and GST registration are active;

  • You have completed deliveries in Australia recently; and

  • You had eligible earnings during the period covered.

If you are not registered for GST, you will not receive an RCTI. That is normal and nothing is wrong.

  • If you recently de-registered for GST and received an RCTI, please let us know and we can amend the records on our system.

Q. I am registered for GST but did not receive an RCTI

A. A few things can cause this:

  • You have not completed deliveries in Australia recently

  • Your ABN or GST registration is not currently active on the Australian Business Register (ABR) - you can check this using ABN Lookup

  • You registered for GST recently and it has not yet flowed through to us from ABR

  • You had no eligible earnings in that period

If your GST registration is active and you still do not receive an RCTI for the next period, please contact Dasher Support.

Understanding the amounts
The RCTI shows up to two types of supply:

Line

What it covers

Delivery services

Your delivery earnings for the period

Delivery services – incentives and bonuses

Certain incentives and bonuses paid during the period related to delivery services

For each line you will see:

  • Value - the amount excluding GST

  • GST - the GST portion

  • Price - the total including GST

Value plus GST equals Price.

Q. Why doesn't the total match my bank deposits?

A. This is the most common question, and a difference is expected. There are four reasons.

1. Tips are not included

This is usually the largest difference. Customer tips are not included on the RCTI.

You still receive your tips in full — they are yours, and nothing has changed about how they are paid to you. They are simply not part of the amounts shown on RCTI.

If you compare the RCTI total against everything that has landed in your bank account, the RCTI total may be lower. That difference is generally your tips.

2. Not every payment type appears

The RCTI covers delivery earnings and certain incentives and bonuses. Some other payment types are not included.

This does not affect what you have been paid, only what appears on this document.

3. The dates work differently

Your delivery earnings and your bonuses are grouped using different dates:

  • Delivery earnings are grouped by when the delivery happened

  • Incentives and bonuses are grouped by when the payment was processed

This means something you earned near the end of a period can appear on the following period's RCTI instead.

4. It is based on when you worked, not when you were paid

The RCTI groups your earnings by when you did the work, not by when the money reached your bank account. If you use Fast Pay or you are comparing against a weekly deposit, the dates may not line up.

Q. Why isn't the period a full calendar month?

A. The ATO requires these documents to be issued within a set time after your supply of services is completed, and that window is shorter than a calendar month. RCTIs are therefore issued roughly twice a month rather than monthly.

Q. What do I need to do with it?

A. There is nothing you need to do with DoorDash, no action is required by you in response to receiving this document.

Keep the document with your records. What you need to do with it for your own tax is a question for the ATO or your registered tax agent - DoorDash is not able to provide tax advice.

Q. Do I need to register for GST?

A. DoorDash cannot advise you on this. Whether GST registration applies to you depends on your own circumstances, including work you do outside DoorDash.

The ATO has full information on GST registration, including who needs to register and when:

For advice specific to your situation, speak with a registered tax agent.

Q. My name, address or ABN is wrong

A. Please contact Dasher Support with the correct details and the period shown on the document, and we will review it.

Q. Why does the document show my address?

A. The ATO requires a tax invoice to show the supplier's details — in this arrangement, that is you. The address shown is the one associated with your Dasher account, and it is handled in line with our privacy policy.

Q. I no longer dash but I am still receiving these

A. RCTIs cover periods when you completed deliveries, so you may still receive an RCTI covering earlier activity. It is a record of that earlier period and does not mean anything has changed with your account.

Q. Is this email genuine?

A. Yes — genuine RCTIs are issued by DoorDash Technologies Australia Pty Ltd, ABN 96 634 446 030.

A genuine RCTI from DoorDash will never:

  • Ask you to make a payment

  • Ask for your bank details, password, or a one-time code

If you receive something claiming to be an RCTI that does any of these, do not act on it. Please report it to Dasher Support.
