Delivering Alcohol Guidelines & Becoming Equipped To Deliver Alcohol

Alcohol delivery for DoorDash is currently available in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. This article applies only to Dashers delivering alcohol in Australia.

Alcohol delivery is optional

Alcohol delivery is optional, and choosing not to opt in to this type of delivery will not impact your ability to receive other orders from restaurants, grocery stores, retail partners, and more. If you wish to opt-out of alcohol delivery for any reason, please navigate to your dasher preferences. If you require further assistance, please contact [email protected].

In addition, if you ever receive an alcohol order you do not wish to perform, you have the option to decline the order before accepting it or cancel the order before picking it up from the merchant.

DoorDash is committed to the delivery of alcohol safely and compliantly. The following information is to help guide you. Your safety, along with the safety of all our Customers and Merchants is our top priority. Please note, you could be held liable if you deliver alcohol in an unlawful way, so it is important that you make sure alcoholic items are delivered responsibly and in line with Government legislation.

Step #1: Becoming equipped for alcohol orders

2. You will then be prompted to complete an Alcohol Delivery Training Module.

3. Follow the prompts to view the course and complete the final quiz (10 mins).

4. You will then be eligible for alcohol orders in your area while you Dash!

Important: Dashers located in NSW & the ACT

All Dashers in NSW or the ACT will need to upload a valid NSW Responsible Supply of Alcohol Training (RSAT) to their account to be eligible for alcohol deliveries in NSW and the ACT.

If you don’t hold a valid Responsible Supply of Alcohol Training (RSAT Course and Assessment) certificate already, complete the online course to receive your certificate.

Submit your certificate in a few simple steps:

  • Open your Dasher app > Account > Online Dasher Education > Start Module > NSW Alcohol Delivery Module > Submit Your Certificate

Step #2: Accepting an alcohol order and picking up an alcohol order from a Merchant

You'll see a notice on the screen indicating the order contains restricted items, including alcohol.

Migrated from Salesforce: https://figment.file.force.com/dashers/servlet/rtaImage?eid=ka0Kd0000018E4t&feoid=00N2L00000AWqPe&refid=0EMKd000007ViOl

You may Accept or Decline these orders. If you Accept, the Dasher app will include the steps required to deliver alcohol safely and compliantly in accordance with applicable state law.

Important:

  • Dashers must be of legal drinking age (18+) and have a valid government-issued ID to deliver orders containing alcohol. Have your ID ready when you pick up the order - Merchants will ask for it.

Step #3: Delivering an alcohol order to a Consumer

Check for signs of intoxication

You must not deliver to a customer who appears to be intoxicated. Here are some steps to help determine if a person is intoxicated.

Physical Signs of Intoxication

  • Look for glassy or bloodshot eyes. Also, look for droopy eyes or if someone clearly has difficulty keeping their eyes open.

  • Notice how the person smells. If you notice that the person’s breath or clothes smell of alcohol, this may be an effective tell-tale sign of intoxication.

  • Watch for impaired motor function. Intoxicated people can’t perform normal tasks in the same way they would if they were sober. If someone is having trouble walking in a straight line or is fumbling with objects, this may be a sign that they are intoxicated.

Signs of Behavioural Intoxication

  • Look for a person’s inhibitions becoming lowered. Some people who are visibly intoxicated exhibit louder behaviour than usual or may make inappropriate comments.

  • Watch out for a person who is slurring their speech.

  • Notice if someone is speaking slower or faster than usual.

  • It is illegal to deliver to a customer who appears to be intoxicated. If the customer is intoxicated, do not complete the delivery and contact support. Your rating will not be affected, and you will still receive the full payment for this delivery.

Request ID

It is against the law to deliver alcohol to a person under 18 years old. For all alcohol deliveries, please request a valid, government-issued ID from the customer to scan. If the customer cannot produce a valid form of ID (i.e., any of the IDs listed above), do not complete delivery and contact support. Your rating will not be affected, and you will still receive the full payment for this delivery.

Acceptable forms of identification:

  • Australian State or Territory driver's license

  • Australian State or Territory learner's permit

  • Australian or foreign passport

  • Proof of age card

When scanning the ID

  • Make sure that the ID is a valid Government-issued ID (see above for accepted forms of ID) and that the photo on the ID matches the person (customer or nominated adult) to whom you are delivering the alcohol.

  • Check the Date of Birth on the ID to make sure that the recipient is over 18 years old.

  • Check to make sure that the ID is authentic/real and not fake/fraudulent.

  • Check the ID’s expiration date. Do not accept an ID that is expired.

  • Place the ID in the palm of your hand when scanning and avoid scanning an ID with a dark background (particularly Victorian IDs due to the transparent strip).

  • Make sure the Date of Birth and Expiry Date are visible and readable during the scan.

Checking the recipient

Ensure the recipient is the customer who made the order or the adult who has been specifically nominated to receive the delivery as per the order details in the Dasher app.

Unattended deliveries

Unattended deliveries are not permitted. This means that alcohol items must always be handed directly to the customer (in line with the other responsible supply principles). If the customer who placed the order, or another nominated adult (e.g., for gift deliveries) is not available to accept the order, do not complete the delivery and contact support. Your rating will not be affected, and you will still receive the full payment for this delivery.

Penalties

Please note, you could be held liable if you deliver alcohol in an unlawful way, and penalties such as those listed below could apply:

Victoria: Maximum penalty is $21,808

New South Wales: Maximum penalty is $11,000

Judgment

Lastly, use your judgment! If you have any doubts about the ID or the customer/recipient, or encounter a situation where you believe delivering alcohol will go against responsible supply principles or Government rules, do not complete delivery and contact support. Your rating will not be affected, and you will still receive the full payment for deliveries where you are unable to complete an alcohol delivery for legitimate reasons. For further information on specific states’ alcohol regulations, please consult local regulatory bodies or Government Agencies.

Important Reminders:

  1. Unattended Deliveries: No unattended deliveries are allowed (even if the customer contacts you and requests you to leave the order unattended). This means that alcohol items must always be handed directly to the recipient at the designated address (in addition to the other responsible supply principles).

  2. Intoxication: It is illegal to deliver alcohol to an intoxicated person. You should always look for signs of intoxication and, if you believe that the recipient is intoxicated, do not deliver.

  3. Dry Zones and Other Prescribed Zones: No deliveries can be made in Dry Zones (as per State/Territory requirements). Delivery restrictions may also apply to Other Prescribed Zones.

  4. Nominated Recipient of the Alcohol Order: Make sure the recipient is the customer who made the order or the adult who has been specifically nominated to receive the delivery.

  5. Don't accept additional orders or special requests for alcohol directly from the Consumer (for example, if they reach out via text or message you in the Dasher app).

Step #4: (if applicable) Returning Alcohol to Merchant

For orders that may not be delivered (for example, if no one meets you to accept delivery, or if the recipient is intoxicated), you will be prompted to not complete delivery and instead remove the alcohol from the order.

After removing the age-restricted items from the original order, you may complete delivery of the other products. You’ll then be provided with step-by-step prompts back to the store and to process a return of the age-restricted items. You’ll be paid like it was a delivered order, with ADDITIONAL PAY for a successful return.

Please ensure to keep a physical copy of your original receipt in case an alcohol return is required. You will be asked to provide this by the merchant upon return.
