British Columbia App-Based Work Regulations
Guide to British Columbia’s New Regulations
Overview
Starting September 3, 2024, Dashers fulfilling orders placed through DoorDash in British Columbia will now earn at least $21.42 per hour (120% of minimum wage), before tips, plus an additional 35 cents per kilometer, during time spent on each delivery. Unfortunately, these and other new B.C. regulations will significantly increase the costs of operating across B.C., and we plan on implementing changes to how our platform operates in the province.
Earnings Minimum & Weekly Pay Adjustments: A Deeper Look
How does it work?
Dashers will continue to dash and earn per offer, but your pay will be reviewed on a weekly basis to see if you qualify for a weekly pay adjustment.
Earnings minimum: Dashers will now earn at least $21.42 per hour of engaged time (from when an offer is accepted until that offer is completed), plus $0.35 per kilometer traveled during that time. This rate is just a minimum, so Dashers still have the opportunity to earn more than the minimum. As always, Dashers will continue to receive 100% of any tips on top of this minimum pay.
Weekly pay adjustments: At the end of each pay period (Monday - Sunday), each Dasher’s earnings are reviewed to see if their pay meets this earnings minimum. For Dashers who earn below the minimum, a pay adjustment will be added by the end of the day on Tuesday. Dashers can view any pay adjustment in their weekly summary on the Earnings tab in the Dasher app and through email summaries.
What are some examples?
Example 1: Dasher who earned less than the earnings minimum during the week
For example, let’s say that you dashed in British Columbia and the following were true for a given week (for third-party delivery orders placed through DoorDash in British Columbia):
Your engaged time was 180 minutes (3 hours)
Your distance traveled during that engaged time was 20 kilometers
Your DoorDash pay for the week was $40
Plus, you earned $10 in customer tips on top
Your minimum earnings for the week would be: [3 hours x $21.42 per engaged hour] + [20 kilometers x $0.35 per km] = $71.26.
Because your DoorDash pay ($40) was less than your minimum earnings ($71.26), you would receive a pay adjustment for the difference of $31.26, bringing your total earnings for the week to $81.26 ($40 DoorDash pay + $31.26 pay adjustment + $10 tips).
Example 2: Dasher who earned more than the earnings minimum during the week
For example, let’s say that you dashed in British Columbia and the following were true for a given week (for third-party delivery orders placed through DoorDash in British Columbia):
Your engaged time was 180 minutes (3 hours)
Your distance traveled during that engaged time was 30 kilometers
Your DoorDash pay for the week was $75
Plus, you earned $15 in customer tips
Your minimum earnings for the week would be: [3 hours x $21.42 per engaged hour] + [30 kilometers x $0.35 per km] = $74.76. Because your DoorDash pay ($75) was higher than your minimum earnings ($74.76), you would not receive a weekly pay adjustment. Your total earnings for the week would be $90 ($75 DoorDash pay + $15 tips).
Here’s an example of how a pay adjustment would appear in the Earnings summary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which deliveries are eligible for minimum earnings?
A: All deliveries completed in British Columbia will be eligible for minimum earnings.
Q: What is the definition of engaged time?
A: “Engaged time,” under British Columbia minimum earnings regulations, is the time you're engaged in completing an offer, which begins the moment you accept a delivery and ends when the delivery is completed.
Note that the Dasher app will display your total engaged time for all dashing, even if some of your dashing is not covered by the British Columbia minimum earnings regulations. For example, if you completed 300 minutes of engaged time on deliveries received through DoorDash in British Columbia and 100 minutes of engaged time in Alberta in the same week, the Dasher app will display your total engaged time on the DoorDash platform – 400 minutes –even though only 300 minutes will be eligible for the British Columbia minimum earnings calculation.
Q: How do you calculate engaged time for batched orders?
A: Engaged time includes all the time you are on any delivery, starting from when you accept the delivery to when you complete it. That means, for batched orders, engaged time starts from when you accept the first order and ends when you make the last dropoff.
Q: If I’m eligible for a pay adjustment, when will I receive it?
A: DoorDash pay periods run from Monday - Sunday. Dashers eligible for a pay adjustment will be issued the pay adjustment automatically on the following Tuesday.
Dashers will continue to receive their earnings based on their chosen payment processing method, whether that’s weekly pay or instantly when opting for Fast Pay.
Q: Am I still going to receive tips?
A: Across all of British Columbia, consumers are now encouraged to leave tips after checking out (rather than before checkout).
You will continue to receive 100% of customer tips. This is on top of earning at least 120% of provincial minimum wage for active time, in addition to mileage as laid out by British Columbia regulations.
Q: What does the information in my Pay Summary mean?
A: As a Dasher, you can always see details about your earnings right in the Dasher App. New British Columbia regulations require that you also provide a written pay summary related to deliveries completed in British Columbia for each pay period.
