Backup Payment Method FAQ

In this article

Q: What is a backup payment method?

A: A backup payment method is a feature that allows you to set an alternative payment method to be used if the default payment method fails or is unsuccessful. If the default payment attempt is unsuccessful, DoorDash will automatically select the next most frequently used alternative payment method to retry the transaction and ensure the order goes through without disruption. This process helps minimize any interruptions.

Q: What happens if the default payment method fails?

A: If the default payment method fails during a transaction, the system automatically retries the next most frequently used payment method to ensure the order goes through seamlessly.

Q: What happens if both the default and backup payment methods fail?

A: If both available payment methods fail, you will be notified with clear instructions on how to resolve the issue. This may include updating payment details or selecting an alternative payment method.

Q: Will I be notified when a backup payment is used?

A: Yes, you will receive real-time updates via the DoorDash app that the backup payment method is used, including transaction details and a link to update payment settings if needed.

Q: How does backup payment work for scheduled orders?

A: For scheduled orders, if the default payment method fails, the system will automatically retry the next most frequently used payment method.

Q: What if you do not want backup payments to be used?

A: You can disable the backup payment feature in your payment settings at any time. Disabling this feature will require you to manually resolve any issues with failed payments, which may result in order delays or cancellations.

Q: If a backup payment method was used for my order, but I want to pay with a different card, how can I switch to my preferred payment method?

A: You can change the payment method for the current order directly from the receipt page in the DoorDash app. By updating the payment method there, the order will be charged to the new selected payment method, and the amount previously charged to the backup payment method will be refunded.

Q: After placing an order using a backup payment method, how long do I have to change the payment method?

A: You have up to 7 days after an order is placed using a backup payment method to switch the payment method for the existing order.

Q: What are valid backup payment methods?

A: Valid payment methods include Credit/Debit Cards, PayPal, Venmo, and CashApp.

Q: What payment methods are not valid?

A: Payment methods that are not valid include Apple Pay, Google Pay, SNAP/EBT, and HSA/FSA.
