Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is an IRD number?
A: An IRD number is a unique number issued by New Zealand Inland Revenue to individuals and non-individuals (such as Companies, Partnerships, Trusts, Charities), usually for your lifetime. It is required when you need to interact with NZ’s tax system and includes both residents and non-residents. It is used for all taxes that you are registered for (such as Income Tax) and for any social policy entitlements operated by Inland Revenue (such as Child Support, Student Loans, and KiwiSaver).
Q:Why do you need my IRD number?
A: On March 3, 2023, New Zealand enacted the Taxation (Annual Rates for 2022-23, Platform Economy, and Remedial Matters) Bill (No 2), which requires suppliers of listed services (e.g., Dashers) operating on an electronic marketplace (e.g., DoorDash) to notify the operator of the electronic marketplace of their IRD number. Beginning with the 2024 calendar year, these rules require DoorDash to report to New Zealand Inland Revenue each Dasher’s full name, residential address, IRD number, date of birth, and payout amounts.
Q: What will happen if I don’t submit a valid IRD number?
A: Starting 1st January 2024, Dashers who fail to provide an IRD number will be unable to dash. However, your Dasher account will not be deactivated, and you can enter your IRD at any time to start receiving offers again. If you are dashing and fail to provide your IRD number to DoorDash, Inland Revenue may impose a NZ$1,000 fine on you.
If you don't want to submit an IRD number and don't intend to use your DoorDash account, contact Dasher Support to deactivate your account.
Q: How do I access my IRD number?
A: You keep the same IRD number for life so, even if you lose it, you do not need to apply for a new one.
If you already have an IRD number, you can verify your details and find your IRD number.
Q: How do I get an IRD number?
A: Based on your work eligibility status in New Zealand, you can follow the below links to apply for a new IRD number:
Q: How can I submit my IRD number to DoorDash?
A: Starting in November, if you still need to submit your IRD number, you'll be prompted to do so each time you log into the Dasher app. After December, you cannot dash without a valid IRD number on file with DoorDash, and the IRD number collection prompt will become non-dismissible.

Q: How do you ensure my IRD number is kept safe?
A: To safeguard your IRD number, we've implemented several protective measures:
Encryption: Your IRD number is stored using advanced encryption techniques.
Limited Access: Only a select group of DoorDash employees can view this information.
Data Separation: Your personally identifiable information is stored separately from your IRD number.
Control Over Your Data: For any requests to view or delete your personal data, navigate to the Account settings in the Dasher app and select "Account data".
Q: Does DoorDash withhold Tax from Dasher pay?
A: No. DoorDash does not withhold any taxes on your behalf. As an independent contractor, it is your responsibility to determine the amount of taxes you owe and remit it to Inland Revenue. The annual earnings report that DoorDash will submit to the government will also be shared with you.
Any questions about what you have to report on your taxes should be directed to a tax professional, as DoorDash cannot provide you with tax advice.
Q: What can I expense in my tax filings?
A: Consult a tax expert to evaluate your specific tax circumstances.
