Occupational Accident Insurance for Dashers in Canada

Occupational Accident Insurance is available for Dashers in Canada. This free, automatic coverage provides support through income replacement, healthcare coverage for uncovered medical expenses, and disability coverage in the rare event of an injury while dashing.

What is Occupational Accident Insurance?

Occupational Accident Insurance provides quick and easy-to-use coverage if you’re injured while dashing with DoorDash. It helps cover medical expenses (including prescriptions, rehabilitation, and other unexpected costs) that may not be covered by existing means and provides income support if you’re unable to dash, among other benefits.

Who is covered under DoorDash’s Occupational Accident Insurance policy in Canada?

Dashers in all provinces and territories where DoorDash operates – except where Dashers are covered by provincial workers' compensation systems, including British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba – are covered by Occupational Accident Insurance if they suffer an injury while online with DoorDash. You do not need to sign up or enroll, as eligibility for coverage is automatic and free.

When does coverage apply?

Occupational Accident Insurance began on March 1, 2026. Coverage applies when you are online and available to dash, while you’re completing deliveries, and for a short period of time after you log off, while you may be commuting home.

What does this coverage include?

If you’re injured while dashing, this coverage may include:

  • Income Support: Up to one year of income replacement, receiving 85% of your average weekly earnings up to a maximum of $500 per week or a minimum of $125 per week if you have little to no earnings history. Coverage is subject to a seven-day waiting period before benefits begin.

  • Medical Expenses: Up to $100,000 toward uncovered medical expenses – including hospital charges, prescriptions, tests, and scans, or necessary medical equipment – after a small $50 deductible. Coverage is also provided for expenses associated with rehabilitation, vision, hearing, and dental care.

This policy also provides additional coverage in the event of certain serious injuries or permanent disabilities, plus support in the extremely rare case of death. All coverage is subject to policy terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions.

How do I file a claim?

Dashers can easily submit a claim via Onsi’s interface – our insurance technology provider – and start receiving income replacement payments based on a doctor’s note that explains the injury you received and an estimated length of injury.

If you experience an injury while dashing:

  • Submit a claim through Onsi.

  • Provide details about the incident.

  • Upload any required documentation, such as a doctor’s note with the estimated length of injury.

Once submitted, your claim will be reviewed, and you’ll be guided through the next steps. Dashers may be asked by the insurer or the insurer’s claims administrator to complete additional follow-ups depending on the severity of the injury or for claim clarification.

Do I need to enroll or pay for this coverage?

No. You’re automatically covered for Occupational Accident Insurance at no cost to you. Assistance for uncovered medical expenses is subject to a $50 deductible.

Is this the same as workers’ compensation?

No. Occupational Accident Insurance is different from workers’ compensation. It is designed for independent contractors. It provides support while maintaining the flexibility to choose when and how you dash.

My bike or car was damaged in an accident. Does Occupational Accident Insurance cover that?

No. Occupational Accident Insurance does not cover property damage. This coverage is for injuries.

Occupational Accident Insurance is secondary to your motor insurance, and it is subject to eligibility requirements and all policy terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions, deductibles, benefit maximums, and applicable law. Submitting a claim does not guarantee that benefits will be approved or paid. Claims are reviewed and determined by the insurer or its claims administrator, not DoorDash. DoorDash may provide information to help verify eligibility, but DoorDash does not make coverage decisions or interpret policy terms.
