Big & Bulky Items

Safe Lift. Safe Delivery.

When delivering heavy or bulky orders, your safety comes first. Taking a few extra moments to assess and move items safely can help prevent injuries to you and others.

Use the tips below whenever lifting, carrying or moving heavy items during a delivery.

Before You Lift

1. Check Before You Lift

  • Assess the weight, size and stability of the item before attempting to move it. Plan how you will lift and carry the order safely. If the item looks too heavy, awkward or unstable, do not attempt to lift it alone.

2. Clear Your Path

  • Before moving the item, make sure your route is clear, stable and free from hazards such as:

    • Wet or slippery surfaces

    • Loose objects

    • Uneven ground

    • Obstacles or tight spaces

    • Lifting Safely

3. Set a Stable Stance

  • Stand close to the item with your feet shoulder-width apart and positioned securely around the load. A stable stance helps you stay balanced while lifting and carrying.

4. Squat — Don’t Bend

  • Lift by bending your knees and hips, not your back. Keep your back straight and use the strength in your legs to lift the item safely.

5. Keep It Close

  • Carry the load close to your waist or body. Where possible, position the heaviest side of the item nearest to you to improve control and reduce strain.

6. Avoid Twisting

  • Do not twist your back or lean sideways while carrying a load. If you need to turn, move your feet and turn your whole body instead.

While Carrying the Item

7. Look Where You’re Going

  • Keep your head up and maintain clear visibility at all times. If the item blocks your view, ask for assistance or reposition the load safely before moving.

8. Maintain a Secure Grip

  • Make sure you have full control of the item before lifting or moving it. If your grip becomes unstable, stop and reposition safely before continuing.

9. Move Smoothly

  • Carry the item steadily and stay in control throughout the delivery. Avoid sudden movements, rushing or carrying loads that feel unstable.

Use Help When Needed

10. Use Assistance for Heavy or Awkward Items

  • For large, heavy or difficult-to-carry orders:

  • Use a trolley or lifting aid where available

  • Ask for help from another person

  • Your safety is more important than rushing a delivery.

Remember

  • If you can’t lift it safely, don’t lift it.

  • Always prioritise your safety and use appropriate assistance when handling heavy orders
